38 Ghost Hunters Part 2: Hijacking Science.

Night vision, the ghost hunter's favorite tool, every paranormal investigator has it, they can't leave the house without a night vision camera or equipment, why is it so popular?, well, because it has helped capture over 2000 ghosts on camera, all hard, cold, evidence that has been approved by scientific research. Oh, wait, no it's not!, it hasn't helped at all, if anything, it makes things more blurry and confusing than they already are.
Yesterday we talked about how popular ghost hunting has become, today, i'm gonna go through some of the things paranormal investigators fail to realize when they are doing their research, how science is different from pseudoscience and how personal feelings or belief influences all the investigation done by ghost hunters.
Coincidences happen, they happen a lot, if you've ever seen one of these TV shows about paranormal activity, you might have noticed that on every episode the phrase "what the hell was that???" is mentioned at least 5 times per episode, has it ever occurred to these people that maybe, just maybe, they are being influenced by their own expectations?, if you go to a house who is supposed to be haunted, normally a big house, an old house, a wooden house, a house that you've never been to for more than the few hours that takes you to shoot a show, wouldn't you have to expect a few cranky noises or light coming into the house from some unexpected places?, wouldn't it be fair to think that "cold spots" on the house, are just like any other cold spot on any other house?, the only difference is that you wouldn't know, because you've never lived on the supposed haunted house!.
Word of mouth is not reliable, how do you know a place is haunted?, well, this guy told me it is, and some other guy told him, and hey, everyone in the damn town knows the place is haunted!, so it must be true?, right?, NO. You can't just assume that without evidence, look what happened with the "amityville horror" house, urban legend said that after the first family had been kicked out of there by the ghost, nobody ever lived there again!, its all a lie, people have been living there ever since, according to the owners "Nothing weird ever happened, except for people coming by because of the book and the movie,".
Pseudoscientific language, you know, things ghost hunters alway talk about, electro magnetic fields, ectoplasm, electromagnetic energy, cold spots, spectrometers, electric radiation, EMF meters, motion sensors, heat detectors. You know you've heard this shit, it all sounds scientific, but it doesn't mean what they want it to mean, and it doesn't work how they want it to work, EMF meters weren't built to detect ghosts, spectrometers have little to do with detecting shapes of energy, and please, next time you hear someone say ghosts are made of electromagnetic energy, or ectoplasm, please, ask them to explain to you, why and or how does he know this?, if there is no answer, its because there is no real investigation about it, and that brings me to my next point.
Investigation or justification?, science is all about testing, testing and doing research, constantly, its ever changing, look how much science has changed since the discovery of the genome, look how much it has changed on the last ten years!, everything that science does is ment for the expansion and evolution of the field. Pseudoscience, like ghost hunting, doesn't care for expansion or doing any tests, it has changed very little in the past 30 years, if it has even changed at all, any small amount of research or investigation that is done, is ment to justify their belief instead of expanding it or challenging it. In science, counterexamples are often searched for existing and accepted theories in order to prove their veracity. In pseudoscience, anything that slightly hints that their belief might be somehow flawed is seen as a hostile attack and will probably lead to some sort of unfruitful lawsuit.
Hits and misses, Count the amount of times you see a picture or video of what is claimed to be a ghost and it wasn't taken on some electromagnetic field, or outside a cold spot, also, the amount of times a ghost hunter creates and excuse on why his research failed instead of just taking bad results like a man. And finally.
Science can't explain it!. How many times has a paranormal investigator stated that they are doing some research because science can't explain what happened, or they have some videos and pictures, that science can't explain!. The fact that science can't explain everything, doesn't automatically mean that it surely must be the works of some spiritual being from beyond the grave, please, ghost hunters, don't be so arrogant, we all have out limits, we can only do stuff within our own knowledge's boundaries. If you see, hear or smell something in a weird house that you've never been on before, then you have to stop and think, that maybe, because of the area, or something that might be on the house, it sometimes smells weird, or because of the material and age of the house, sometimes noises are heard, or because you don't know and you are not used to the house, maybe light goes through some odd spots, maybe there's some small holes that your night vision camera can't see and wind goes through them causing your so called cold spots. You can't just say "well, i can't explain whats going on, so it must be a ghost!".
If you really consider yourself a paranormal investigator, or are interested in doing real science to find ghosts, well, then do real science, don't hijack it, twist it around and mold it so you can justify your silly beliefs, extraordinary claims need extraordinary evidence.

You bring out excellent points.
cats have incorporated nightvision
cool
thanx for support bro <3
interesting article!
Paranormal is a general term that designates experiences that lie outside "the range of normal experience or scientific explanation" or that indicates phenomena that are understood to be outside of science's current ability to explain or measure. :D
the cat is scaring the shit out of me.
awesome dude! supportin
Interesting :o
awwwwww the cat's so cute..
Showin' the daily support.
paranormal activity, this blog reminds me of.
I love watching these shows, but they always seem to catch poor shots of stuff and nothing substantial, some are quite scary though and this was a good read :D <3

Bill Murray is the only true ghost hunter.
hey great work bro Nice blog and great posts :D
'extraordinary claims need extraordinary evidence'
reminds me of christianity
i agree with sildude :]
Well...I wouldn't say Science is never-changing. The scientific ideal is fairly consistent over time, but all the tools and all the rules are subject to the whim of the latest discovery.
But when it comes to "how did it all start?"...Really, I couldn't care less. What good does that piece of knowledge actually do me? Even if God was a proven fact, I can't say becoming her loyal follower is likely given her track record. Just sayin...
@KC i said science was "ever changing" not "never changing" lol
kitty! :D
I've been at a friend's house and they watched Ghost Hunters. Seriously that show is ridiculous. It amounted to lots of badly recorded audio, grainy camera shots, "cold spots", night-vision of course, and lots of group hysteria. Absolutely nothing happened that even made me go "huh, interesting" in the entire three episodes I watched. If there is anything legitimate about ghost hunting it is being destroyed by the show Ghost Hunters.
i believe in ghosts!
cats
never was a fan of ghosthunters
So true, these people create the situation for themselves. Every bump or noise is a ghost to them.
Great post, but I never have enjoyed any ghost hunter. Why hunt for things that are all around us?

I feel like that cat is REALLY talking to me.
You forgot to mention that it's most likely that most paranormal investigators don't actually believe in ghosts, but are doing it for the money. Sounds like a fun gig: exploit people and get paid for it. Sounds like religion.
i don`t like ghost:P

Simply put: Ghosts and science should have nothing to do with each other. :)
Excellent blog man really interesting stuff. Sadly it's true when they say that. But a few can be legitimate. Just not as many as they claim to be lol

I absolutely despise those stupid ghost shows. They are so full of crap.

ghosts are scary
wow nice!
Ghost hunters are the biggest trolls on the planet. Did you see the south park where they make fun of TAPS? Well, its pretty much like that. I have a friend that watches this shit constantly and I want to rip his jaw off with a claw hammer.
scary stuff
Ah, cute cat! Fuck the rest. :]
