39 Ghost Hunters Part 1: Ghosts love ignorance.

With the rise of the internet and sites like youtube, there has been an inevitable uprise on these freelance, amateur, so called, ghost hunters, or paranormal investigators, the phenomenon has been extended even to mainstream television with shows like "Ghost Hunters" or "Ghost Adventures". Despite the lack of acceptance among the scientific community, ghost hunters shamelessly misuse technology like night vision, motion sensors or EMF meters to facilitate their job. Ghost hunting is such an easy job, that most shows have probably influenced the average viewer into doing some investigation of their own, after all, who hasn't heard a ghost story during a gathering or reunion?.

According to this article, 34% of Americans believe in ghosts, that's a pretty big number, enough for a bunch of charlatans to make a living thanks to ignorance. Ghost hunting is a multi million dollar industry, its not just about going into some abandoned hospital or some creepy house, it has plenty limes to squeeze, there are many stores and websites that advertise and sell ghost hunting equipment, there's ghost counseling, books, a ton of books, DVDs, websites, advertising and tours of supposed haunted mansions or hotels.

A multi million dollar industry that makes all of their money from pseudoscience and unproven events they call facts, also, every time they can, ghost hunters will bash scientific facts often claiming that some house is hunted because science can't explain whats going on, of course on most cases science has provided an explanation but not one that paranormal investigators can agree with because the conclusion wasn't "it was a ghost", on other cases, science simply doesn't have the time to go around wasting time watching paranormal video by paranormal video explaining what really is happening.

But Nigma, come on, maybe they are taking advantage of people, but its fun and people love it, and its a really safe hobby to have isn't it?. Well, no its not. According to this report, a year ago, a woman fell three stories to her death while trying to investigate a 134 year old gothic style university that was rumored to be haunted.

As to why people believe this, well, among some other things, it gives them hope, hope that there is life after death, i believe that to be the strongest reason as to why people believe in ghosts, they also feel like they are helping this troubled spirit by investigating what his problems are, maybe like that they will put his soul to rest. Among the thousands of ghost hunters, not only in america, but also, around the world, not one of them has provided clear evidence on the existence of ghosts, not a single one.

Ghosts themselves are creatures that go head first against the laws of physics, then come a few other logical facts that go against their cause, like, if they are spirits, why do most stories involve them wearing clothes?. Of course any ghost hunter will tell you that they are made of energy, and like any good pseudo scientific bullshitter will probably tell you that it works because of quantum mechanics. The facts are, nobody can come up with real evidence, other than anecdotal claims, blurry videos and weird looking pictures, of course by now with photoshop and programs like after effects or sony vegas, videos and photos are no longer a valid form of evidence for paranormal researchers.

photoshop's new ghost button!

Next time someone you know tells you that he knows someone that knows someone who's house is haunted, you tell them to gather up scientists from the nearest labs and universities, call the media, and the police, and take them all to his house, why?, because if all those people witness a ghost or a paranormal event, and are able to verify it, the friend of your friend who knows a guy might be next in line for the Nobel prize for physics because of his magnificent discovery, being the first person to ever discover a ghost and that there is some form of life after death would make him bigger than Jesus, his life would be made, books, movies, TV shows, interviews. Of course after hearing this, the person who always talks to you about ghosts will think you are an asshole, and will think twice before telling you another silly ghost story, believe me.

This is the end of part one of my ghost hunter article, tomorrow ill talk about the top mistakes ghost hunters make wile investigating paranormal activities and why their claims are pure pseudoscience. So be sure to check the blog tomorrow for part 2.

I actually do believe in ghosts, but not those stupid shows. Sometimes it's funny to watch just to see what sort of bullshit they try to play, though :P

I do realize the concept of a ghost is illogical, but my mind can't dismiss it completely. I can't base it on science, nor wish to change anyone's opinion on this. I can't describe my reasoning other than an instinct really, so perhaps I'm just nutty. I just don't completely dismiss certain ideas unless I have enough evidence (thus why I'm agnostic, not atheist).

There was a Cracked article on why those ghost finding reality shows were completely bogus.

Nothing more than vague commentary and fuzzy, static filled visuals.

Nice read, but most things you see on the web is fake.

I have encountered a ghost once in my life but it was kinda weird lol

i believe that the part of the brain that is responsible for "feeling" the presence of god is also the part that is responsible for the ghost phenomenon.
